SRP is Ready for the ErP Directive

Superior Radiant Products is pleased to announce that our radiant tube heaters are fully compliant with the requirements of the new ErP 2018 Directive for Radiant Heaters under Lot 20. The new stricter requirements under ErP 2018 became effective January 1, 2018, for all radiant heaters sold in the EU. Be sure to look for the unique ErP Compliant logo on SRP product literature and website data required under the Directive starting April 1, 2018.

What is the ErP 2018 Directive For Radiant Heaters?

The Energy Related Product Directive 2009/125/EC (ErP for short) is a European Council Regulation which implements a series of measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy efficiency. Both radiant tube heaters and luminous heaters are covered by the scope of Lot 20 of the Directive.

For detail information about Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/1188 of implementing Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council with regard to ecodesign requirements for local space heaters, please kindly refer to links below with languages selection for your reference:

How does the ErP 2018 Directive for radiant heaters benefit consumers and the environment?

Local space heaters are subject to EU ecodesign requirements. Replacing conventional gas-fired heaters by a highly efficient gas-fired heater can save consumers up a lot over the lifetime of the product. Lower emissions will also improve air quality worldwide.

What are ecodesign requirements for space heating?

The implementation and requirements of the Directive in respect of both gas-fired radiant tube heaters and gas-fired luminous heaters become effective as from1st January 2018.

From this date, all heaters which are used to provide thermal comfort for human beings must achieve a seasonal efficiency of more than:

  • For gas-fired radiant tube heaters = 74%
  • For gas-fired luminous heaters = 85%

Additionally, NOx emissions must not exceed:

  • For gas-fired radiant tube and luminous heaters 200 mg/kWh

What does seasonal efficiency mean?

The seasonal efficiency calculation required under the Directive takes into account the thermal efficiency, radiant efficiency, and electrical power consumption.

Why does the efficiency threshold seem lower than those currently achieved?

This is because the European Council have chosen to use gross calorific values rather than the net calorific values that are currently used to determine thermal efficiency.
